Introduction
Hilltop School serves a mainly urban catchment in South Yorkshire. There are high levels of social and economic disadvantage in South Yorkshire and almost 40% of Hilltop pupils live in the most disadvantaged communities in Rotherham.
However, we are lucky to serve 95 amazing children and young people who are well-supported by hardworking and dedicated families.
Hilltop is an all age (2-19) school for children and young people with severe learning difficulties and complex needs.
An analysis of our pupils’ primary and secondary needs shows that: 16% of our pupils experience severe learning difficulties; 23 % of our pupils experience profound & multiple learning difficulties; 39 % of our pupils have autistic spectrum difficulties;
3% speech language & communication difficulties. A small number of our pupils have complex medical needs and degenerative medical conditions. 29% of pupils are entitled to free school meals, 11% of pupils are from a home background where English is an additional language and 5% of pupils are Looked After by the Local Authority.
65% of our pupils are boys and 25% are girls.
There are currently 95 pupils on roll. Approximately half our pupils start school in Hilltop’s EYFS provision and half transfer into the school from other schools and specialist settings. There has been a significant increase in the number of pupils transferring into the school from other schools in Key Stages 2 and 3 and at the end of Key Stage 4.
Attainment on entry to the school is very low compared to age-related expectations. Almost all pupils are working between P1 and P8. A small number are working at National Curriculum Levels 1 and 2 in some areas of learning.
The school uses a wide range of assessment tools, including B Squared. Pupils’ end of year and end of Key Stage
attainment is also tracked using
P Levels and National Curriculum Levels. In Key Stages 4 and 5, pupils’ progress is tracked using a wider range assessment tools and young people in 16-19 work towards an increasing number of functional and vocational qualifications.
Hilltop is a community school with strong links to the Maltby Learning Community and the wider partnership of primary, secondary and special schools in Rotherham.
Hilltop is now part of the Nexus Multi Academy Trust with Kelford and Abbey schools.
We have recently developed a joint EYFS & KS 1 Provision with Maltby Redwood Academy and a joint Visual Arts and Technology Provision with Maltby Academy. This work has extended and enriched our pupils’ learning and created opportunities for our children and young people to work and learn in a mainstream EYFS, primary or secondary setting.
