We are working to create a Careers Education programme framed by the Gatsby Career Benchmarks.
We aim to provide students and parents with appropriate and differentiated information about careers education as well as arming students with the skill set needed as they leave Hilltop and step into the world of further education and/or work.
We start to introduce our students to the world of work and their future through activities and experiences integrated into the school curriculum from years 7 or 8 onwards. This involves visits from different businesses, providers and other services. We implement trips to different places of work that expose the students to personal safety learning, work experience opportunities and Mini Enterprise initiatives including Christmas and Summer fetes
We run specific Work Related Learning on Thursdays and the Post 16 students experience many different on and off site work settings including Office, Library, and Maintenance. Students also go to spend time at other provider premises in order to familiarise themselves and develop confidence for future placement.
In terms of new projects; we are currently establishing a hair salon and work shop on site at school.
Our Life-skills House was opened in September 2018 where students have been learning real, meaningful transferrable life-skills.
Many students take part in work placements throughout the year. These include work in shops, schools and businesses in our local community or near their own homes. Other students have In-House placements in school if not yet ready for placements in the community.
We strongly promote the student voice and through Person Centred Reviews we endeavour to facilitate work experience placements which meet the individual needs and interests of our students.
We also run enterprise initiatives such as a café, Fruit and Veg shop, lunches for staff, personal cosmetics catalogue and seasonal schemes.
Key stage 4 students experience community life as part of their regular week which consists of being educated out of school and applying skills they have learnt lower down the school in a practical way.
Developing life skills such as shopping, travel training and communication is integral to their education at Hilltop school.
Some of our 14-19 students are also working with SENDIASS, Rotherham Advocacy and Job Centre Plus to help them gain the skills needed to deal effectively with their life and to express their wishes and worries for the present and the future.
At 16 our students have annual Person Centred Reviews that enable students, family and carers to have input into the direction that the student’s path will take.
A lot of this work is done through a series of PCR lessons to prepare for the review.
Personalised timetables are built around the action plans from these reviews.
The school works closely with parents in an effort to plan and facilitate a smooth transition to Post 19 provision. We provide guidance and information to enable parents and students to make effective decisions
about services available once they leave school.
We plan visits to all colleges, Day Services and Supported living throughout Post 16 to ensure students and parents experience all avenues and they are able to make an informed choice.
Many of our students move onto a college course when they leave. As part of our Vocational Studies we also visit the Day Services and set up links for those students who will go there at 19.

Finance
We look at grants and fund raising to support the wide range of additional
careers related activities that take place in our department.
We are grateful to our parents’ £1.50 weekly class funds and for supporting our mini-enterprise schemes
and other fund raising events.
Without these funds we would not be able to -
Subsidise outside visits to cafes, garden centres and many other venues
Buy juice, yoghurts for breaks
Fund leisure and sporting activities in the community
Help towards bus costs
Help towards the extra costs of meal preparation
And much more.
The next review of the careers programme will be in September 2024
with Hannah Weinhold who is the Link Governor.
