Update RE: Coronavirus / COVID-19.
Dear Families,
As you know the Government is updating schools daily with advice. Yesterday we received more information regarding what the Government is defining as high-risk underlying health conditions.
As a Headteacher and a parent myself I feel it is necessary to share with you these definitions/characteristics so that you are able to make an informed decision about whether or not to send your child into school.
The Government is advising that those within high risk groups are at increased risks of severe illness and to be particularly stringent in following social distancing measures.
The objective of social distancing is to reduce the probability of contact between a person carrying an infection, and others who are not infected, so as to minimise disease transmission.
We understand that this will be worrying for you and if your child falls into one of the following categories and you wish to keep your child at home for social distance reasons we will mark their attendance as
‘exceptional-agreed’
Conditions / Government Guidance
This group includes those who are:
• chronic (long-term) respiratory diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis etc.,
• a weakened immune system
• chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS),
a learning disability or cerebral palsy
• chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
• chronic kidney disease
• chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis
• diabetes
• problems with your spleen – for example, sickle cell disease or if you have had your spleen removed
• being seriously overweight (a BMI of 40 or above)
• aged 70 or older (regardless of medical conditions)
• under 70 with an underlying health condition listed below (i.e. anyone instructed to get a flu jab as an adult each year on medical grounds)
• those who are pregnant
As schools are expected to continue to remain open, we would like to inform you that the above conditions
also relate to staff and therefore this new information will probably result in greater numbers of staff absence as they will not be in work due to social distancing reasons.
With this in mind I am now unable to guarantee that all of your child’s usual class team will be in school so therefore it may be necessary to combine classes or potentially move children to a different class.
At the moment we are not needing to do this and we will try to keep everything as routine and usual as we can.
If we are unable to ensure the safety of children due to the reduced staff numbers we may need to close a particular class. This will mean that we close a class each day on a rota so that we can ensure sufficient
staffing and also so that one class is not adversely affected more than others.
I realise the impact that this new advice puts onto families but would encourage you all to take this advice seriously and act accordingly.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
If you need to talk this through or you are concerned about the safety of your child please contact me.
Yours sincerely
David Burdett

Dear families,
As you’re probably aware, the Government’s guidance on how to respond to the Coronavirus (Covid–19) pandemic has changed from the ‘contain’ phase to one of delaying the spread of the virus.
We’re getting in touch to let you know what we’re doing in light of this - and what part you can play - to help make sure our school community keep safe and calm.
I’d like to reassure you that we’re taking all of the necessary steps to protect our community and are continuing to follow official guidance from the Government.
What’s the current situation?
The school remains open – this is the current official guidance we’ve been given and at this time we have no evidential reason to close school. All school functions continue to run as normally as we can, though we are reviewing this daily in line with updated Government guidance and local changes (i.e. any increase in staff absence). Pupils should attend unless they feel unwell – if your child has any of the following symptoms they should remain at home for 14 days:
- a new, continuous cough and/or
- a temperature
If your child is unwell, report this as you would normally by ringing us in the office, using MyEd app or by emailing us.
We’ll keep you up to date with any changes to the current situation.
We were planning to have sports day Friday 3rd April. I believe, by then, there is likely to be a
Government ban on larger gatherings and I am choosing to postpone/cancel this now for all our learners to reduce uncertainty and anxiety.
What we’re doing to protect and support students and staff
If a pupil presents as unwell in school with a temperature or a new continuous cough, we will be asking you to pick your child up straight away and take them home. We would expect any pupil or member of staff to remain away from school for at least 14 days. This is a precautionary step and does not mean – where a child or a staff member goes into self-isolation – that we have a confirmed case of Coronavirus. If the school were to have a confirmed case, we would work immediately with local authorities, Public Health England and the Health Protection Agency to plan a response.
We are very fortunate that our cleaning team have really ‘stepped up’ and each classroom is having a very thorough clean with additional antibacterial wipes for all commonly used surfaces like door handles, tables and general surfaces.
We are also continually reinforcing hand-washing and providing hand sanitizers (as we always have) so ensure we have robust infection control measures in place. This isn’t new activity for our school, but it’s important you know we take these steps.
What we need you to do
If you’ve recently changed your contact details, please inform the school office as soon as possible via email, home school diary or telephone. If you have not signed up to the MyEd app it is a useful and easy way to make contact.
Please come and collect your child straight away, if we ask you to (we’ll contact you if they become ill with either a temperature or a new, continuous cough). I am also aware we have some pupils who are very vulnerable to respiratory infections and are generally ‘poorly’. If you are worried about the risks to your child, please give me a ring.
If you have any questions
Contact the school office, if you have any questions about our response to this issue.
Please visit the NHS website if you want to know more about the symptoms of Coronavirus.
If you think you or your child may have the symptoms, use NHS 111 online if at all possible before calling 111.
The Department for Education has established a Coronavirus helpline: 0800 046 8687. Please utilise this resource if you have any questions about the Government’s response to coronavirus in relation to schools, though all information is published on the DfE website.
Also, please refer to the Government’s travel advice, if you want to know whether any upcoming trip or holiday you’re taking abroad should go ahead. If you are going abroad, please let us know where you have been just so we can assure ourselves you have not been in a high risk area.
If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
