Family Support Team

The Family Support leads to oversee the team and will aim to support families & ensure
you get the best support from the right people.


Family Support Worker Shared Responsibilities
Early help referrals / assessments
Referrals to & liaising with other services
Support with form filling DLA etc
Support in meetings.
 Help with any problems at home, dietary issues & bedtime routines surrounding your young person
Liaise with the class teams, Family & Learning Support Team within the school.
​ To help with behaviour, communication,
sleep & transitions into & out of Hilltop school.
Arrange information sessions & training for parents
Manage keyworker systems within the school
Signpost to events & services in our local area

Claire is a Makaton Regional Tutor, providing training workshops & support with Makaton for families.

Wendy Gillespie
Support Officer - Communication VI [Visual Impairment] & PECS

Mathew Seamarks
Mathew works alongside Andy supporting challenging behaviours across school.
Mathew & Andy liaise weekly to discuss specific behaviour needs for individual students across
school & how best to support them.
Mathew is also a Team Teach trainer & supports training across the school.
Using specialist skills / training / experience to support student in their personal care & health
​needs to promote independence.
Assist with the development & implementation of Individual Education, Behaviour & Care plans.
Establish productive working relationships with student, acting as a role model & setting
high expectations for others.
Promote the inclusion & acceptance of all students within the classroom.
Support the student consistently whilst recognising & responding to their individual needs.
Encourage the student to interact & work co-operatively with others & engage in activities.
Promote independence & employ strategies to recognise & reward achievement of self reliance.
Provide & record feedback on progress and achievement

 
Jo Helas
Sensory Occupational Therapist

Jo can provide specialist sensory integration assessments & therapy.
Jo will be working with students to identify ways to overcome their sensory difficulties & put in
​place activities & programmes to help them respond more effectively.
​She will also provide training to teachers & families to help them by providing ongoing support.

 
Scott Walker
Support Officer - Sensory Support

Scott will be following the assessments & suggestions from Jo & running one to one
sensory sessions for individuals.
They will also be running sensory circuits in the mornings for whole classes.
Scott can help by suggesting ways to help with sensory issues in class and at home.
 

 
Helen Salim & Robyn Gillespie
Support Officers - Emotional Literacy
They will run one to one sessions in emotional literacy and can also work with teachers and parents/ carers.
Emotional Literacy involves having self-awareness and recognition of one’s own feelings and knowing how to manage them, such as the ability to stay calm when angered or to reassure oneself when in doubt.
​It includes empathy, i.e. having sensitivity to the feelings of other people and it has been said that emotionally literate people can employ self-discipline to harness their emotions and identify and reach their personal goals.

 
Vikki Kerry
Support Officer - Physical Health Wellbeing & Sleep
Vikki works with students and their families to advise parents/carers in all aspects of Physical Health whether this be diet, alternative exercise, toileting or sleep issues.
Vikki is a qualified sleep practitioner and can answer your queries about:-
Sleep routines for children and young adults
Sleep associations
Bedwetting
How to deal with sleep terrors and nightmares
Creating resources to support good bedtime routines
Sleep environments
Sleep apnoea
​Rhythmic movement disorders

 
Vicky Abukan
Support Officer - Post 19 Provisions & Transition

Vicky’s role is to support the Senior Leadership Team and Family Support Coordinators to develop a family centred provision that proactively seeks to support families.
Transitions
Coordinate and facilitate person-centred review meetings (PCRs)
Coordinate and facilitate Y14 interim meetings and PCRs
Link with multi-agencies outside of school
e.g. parents/carers, EHCP teams, social workers & post 19 provisions

Oversee that multi-agencies actions are followed through and chased up if they are not
​complete or require changes

Offer effective transitions to post 16/19 students
Ensure that students get the correct post 19 provision
Update agencies throughout the year using a rolling programme
Support parents and families throughout the process of a transition Monitor placements success long term

 
Adele Alderson
Support Officer - Moving & Handling

Adele has a recognised IOSH approved qualification so she can deliver manual handling
training within Hilltop School.
This includes the safe use of hoists and slings, necessary manual handling techniques, practical and theory training for all staff in the workplace and supplying staff and pupils with equipment to support good
moving & handling.
She has an understanding of the legal requirements that schools need to adhere to.
She carries out individual risk assessments for pupils and creates bespoke Moving and Handling Plans.
Adele laisse’s with professionals, the headteacher, the senior leadership team and teaching assistants to make sure Moving & Handling is effective, safe and pupil-centred.

She can advise parents in the home environment so if you would like any guidance please contact the school.
