MAKATON SIGNS OF THE MONTH
Hi everyone, I’m Claire Moss. I work in the Family Support Team and I am a Makaton Tutor.
We also have 2 other Makaton Tutors in school – Hollie Karle who teaches in upper school and Gloria Brookes who manages the Library and works in the Phonics and Literacy intervention team.
For those of you not familiar with it, Makaton is a form of communication which involves signing,
speech and the use of symbols.
The symbols we use are the same ones we use with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and in timelines, now and next boards etc.
When a child has little or no expressive communication, it is important to expose them to as many communication opportunities as possible.
If your child is learning Makaton, they will also have a personalised programme, which will teach them signs which are more personal and, therefore, motivating for them.
I have produced this (amateur!!) video below so that parents, carers and families are able to see the signs we are introducing in class this month. It may be that your child will try to communicate the signs they have seen at school when they are at home and there’s nothing more frustrating for you or your child when you don’t understand what they are trying to tell you.
If you would also like the symbols to support the signs, please ask your Class Team via your child’s diary and they will send them home for you.
If you would like any further information about Makaton or other communication systems, please contact me at cmoss@nexusmat.org and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
